Artist Statement:
Skies and seas are the
foundation of most of my
paintings; capturing the
movement of a wave or the
light on clouds is in every
sense a challenge and the
moment when all the elements
are in harmony is fleeting.
When all these elusive
features are brought together
successfully in ...

Why Did You Become An Artist Because I enjoy the process and get great satisfaction when the end result comes somewhere near to the original expectations that I had when I started work on the piece. I also do it to please others and to sell. It never ceases to amaze me that not only has my work attracted admiration, but that people have spent not insignificant sums of money on purchasing some of them. I find this very flattering and it is also accompanied by a sense of responsibility that I have to go on improving to justify the investment that people have made in my work.

Your Personal Biography I grew up in the freedom of Hong Kong and New Zealand which was a far cry from my life as a counter terrorist intelligence officer, which now seems a life-time away. Art has given me an opportunity to express myself with the thoughts and feelings of my unique experiences.
Many issues cause me concern these include personal freedom (a major issue just now) and liberty, the rise of ignorance in our society, the growth of greed and irresponsibility. This may be surprising given my background of thirty- five years in the police, but it just that experience which has opened my eyes to many of the problems our society faces. By family background I am what I suppose would be called middle class, yet I yearn for a society that is not so divided along class lines, but is not evened out by dumbing down.
Whilst not an ‘environmentalist’ it does worry me that we are causing long term harm to that which sustains us, we live (for the most part) in surroundings of beauty which should nurtured not despoiled (e.g. roadside litter). The UK landscape and that of Suffolk in particular has provided me with huge inspiration for coasts and skies. Along with the environment comes animal welfare and I have been a long term donor to the WWF; one of the reasons horses have figured largely in my work is that I do believe they should be celebrated as we owe them so much. Maybe I am a hypocrite, because I am no vegetarian! By way of seeming incompatible contrasts I also paint the machines of war such as aircraft and ships. Not because I have any love of, or connection with war, which by the way I think should be avoided at all costs – but because they hit various emotive buttons. Into such paintings it is possible to weave all sorts of narratives and make full use of the sea and sky in all its beauty and drama.
Finally as regards my lifestyle it has been far from humdrum and I guess we enjoy a very stable existence, but without being complacent. I also try very hard not to take things too seriously and inject humour into situations whenever possible.
